Prized Tate's Cookies at Long Island Multi-sport Events

Event Power of Long Island has about a dozen multi-sport events. These events include duathlons (bike and run) and triathlons from sprint distance to a half ironman distance.  The unique thing about these events is that they incorporate and support many local businesses.  One such business is Tate's Bake Shop, located in Southampton, NY.

At each event, a bag of Tate's Cookies raffled off.   However, the more coveted are ones given to the winner of the race, overall and age group.  While these are probably the same recipe.  Winning the cookies by coming in first makes them taste better!

I plan to earn these Tate's Cookies!

Tobay Junior Triathlon in Oyster Bay, NY

I am continually amazed at my children.  This time I will dote on Zachary!  He has run a different distances. 100m dash,1500m in track, X-Country, a 5k Fun Run and anything in between.  Already a proud Dad.

So this year when I decided to start training for my first Triathlon over in Southold after thinking I was never going to run again after messing my back up last year.  I was looking for some training seminars and found the Tobay Triathlon.  As I flipped through the brochure for the race, I noticed they had a Junior Tri.

I asked Zachary, if he wanted to do a Triathlon.  He said, "Sure!  What is it?"  :)
I knew he could swim, because we made sure he learned to swim after almost drowning in my friends pool, and biking came easy.  So I thought this was a great opportunity for him to experience an event like this.

The race directors of the event also had training sessions each Saturday before the race.  That was a great opportunity to get the lay of the land with the course and transitions.   Personally, I love exploring new courses and I do my best to avoid training on the same roads.  While I know it's important to review the course.  I personally love seeing something new!  Anyway, as a kid, knowing where things will be helps build confidence.

The day of the race, the waters were calm and the event was very organized.  They separated the age groups in to 3.  And had the 12-13 start first, 10-11 next, and lastly 8-9 year olds.  The directors also made sure that each age group was finished before the next age group started.  They made the kids feel special during the race.  Also dividing it up like that help alleviate the congestion and confusion that would have happened if all the kids were racing at the same time.

Some of the kids were veterans of doing Triathlons, others looked like they did not even train as I watched several parents and kids looking confused mounting their bikes in the transition area.  While my family is new to the sport, we had some education and was happy to share some advice, because of safety.

I noticed my son sort of zone out before the race.  Something I sort of do as well.  I know I am not going to win any awards, but being in a crowd of hundreds or thousands always gets the butterflies floating in the belly.

What was interesting, some parents looked anxious as well, which probably transferred to their kids.  Unfortunately, I witnessed some critical parents as well.  I hate being judgmental and the day should be filled with fun and enjoyment.  This is a long term lifestyle, and is it really that important that they remember their baby powder?  We are here to be part of their lives.  If it's not fun for you, do you believe by criticizing them for probably something simple will make them love the sport.  Our job is to inspire, motivate, mold and assist them in being Awesome Humans, and it starts with us Being Awesomely Awesome.

At the end, whenever you berated them.  It does not compare to that last hug many years from now.
They are not mini version of you.  You are part of their journey as they are part of yours.  Make the most of it!

Let me get back to the race... At the end it was a great day!  In my heart and I am not pushing, we will be doing an Ironman together :)

Focus T25 Cross Training Shoes by Reebok

While it is hard to tell from the screen what shoes Shaun T is wearing, he does mention liking Reebok CrossFit Cross Training Shoes.

With the quick lateral movements of Focus T25, similar to P90X3 you want to have the stability of a cross training shoe.

These Reebok Crossfit Nano 3.0 are similar to the ones above.  But always try out different pairs of shoes that will work for you and your feet.

With Tears, We Completed our First Triathlon

A lot of things have happened since my last email detailing my back injury and what I thought was to be my final running exploit to be shared with you.  Regardless, I rested, treated my herniated disc, did Tai Cheng, and The Ultimate Reset Cleanse.  Eventually, I felt I was able resume running again.  Huzzah!  Then something out of left field change my life dramatically.  Keep reading and you will find out what exactly happened in the coming paragraphs.

Fast forward to this past Sunday around 7:10 am, I dragged my butt out of the Southold Bay in 381 place.  Thinking to myself, I will be needing more swim lessons as I overheard one of the officials notice that there were 2 swimmers out on the course.  The one official said to the other, you have to pull them from the race.   I sort of ignored their comments because I was sure it was not Irene.

I ran to the transition area, stripped out of my wetsuit, got my helmet and glasses on (time for Lasik), pushed the bike out of the transition area, and took off the best I could and passed a few people.  Returned my bike to the rack and looked over to Irene's transition section to find that her bike was gone.  Got my bike shoes off and on went my running shoes.  I was able to catch up to a few friends and neighbors.  Lynn asked me if I saw Irene, I yelled, "Her bike is off the rack, so that is a good sign!"  Little did I know what was going to happen next.

About 8:50 am, my heart sank as I looked into the tearful eyes of The Love Of My Life looking so disappointed at a time of triumph.  Was it tears of joy or was she in pain.  So I put my arms around her and gently asked, "What happened?"  She shook her head and her very sad face clamped her lips shut hesitating to reveal the meaning of welling in her eyes.  I leaned in and whispered into her ear, "Did you Not Finish?"  She cried a some more in my arms, as a few more people crossed the finish line at the 15th Mighty North Fork Triathlon in the background.

I said to her that she should be proud of your DNF.  Most people would have left after being pulled into a boat for being in the water for too long.  However the other woman, her name is Rose Marie Savage, who was in the boat as well decided to continue on and urged Irene to continue as well.  As they reached the shore, the race officials removed their timing chips around their ankles.  They grabbed their bikes and pedaled 8 miles and then ran 3.5 miles to officially complete the race unofficially. Who was really going to stop them!

Even though, she did not officially have a logged time, she actually finished ahead of at least 5 people!  I am so proud that she continued on.  Now she has a base to work with and can only get better.  Keep in mind, Irene started swim lessons about 3 months ago, never swimming more than a simple doggy paddle.  In fact she never swam in any open water until dipping into the calm Connetquot River a couple weeks prior.

As we walked around and congratulated my friends Linda, Lynn and a bunch of other people.  I started to think about 164 days before this race, where I found myself waking up in a hospital room, after having a seizure from something I was born with!  Never any indication of anything was going to happen.  Go figure!  I am fine now,  at least I think I am.  You will have to ask Irene, my kids or my friends.  I am sure they would tell you, what I have, Explains a Lot!  LOL!

Thank goodness it did not get worse.  Because I might not have seen my Best Friend complete something that she was terrified of doing.  How incredible is it to be able to spend quality time with your Life Mate.  For us, it happens to be something athletic and something that we share as a family.  I really am the Luckiest Guy in the World to be married to the Greatest Woman in the World.

And just you wait, when she takes on the Tobay Triathlon next month!

Regardless of What Happened, I will Run the Boston Marathon!

Earlier today, I friend who has been struggling with his weight called me to let me know he signed up for the Boston Marathon, and I was the first person he called to say that I inspired him to sign up.  I was flattered and so happy to hear that news that I was looking forward to my meeting.

As I was in a middle of helping launch a new company, we took a break and I checked my email and noticed a bunch of people tagging me on Facebook.  A confusion set in and my colleague announced a bombing at the Boston Marathon!

First I quickly checked FB to make sure that no one I knew running this year were ok and they were, and I took a moment to say a prayer.  A bunch of emotions bounced in my Tour, as the Boston Marathon was the race that I was going to cap my 50 State Marathon Run, thinking about what if that happened when I ran any marathon, to the passing of young boy who is Elijah's age, to all the families and friends who came out to cheer triumph and victory only to feel fear and worry.

More importantly, all the people who committed, sacrificed, and worked so hard to prepare for this legendary race, only to be part of this horror and tragedy.  My concern is to all the people who dream of doing a marathon, to all the people who have changed their lives because of a marathon, to all the people who have inspired others to be healthier, and to all the people who have raised millions of dollars to help different caused from childhood obesity to cancer will cause a negative shift for this positive uplifting event.

Today is my second to last day of my Cleanse, and for the past 20 days I have eaten clean and not cheated once.  As I walked into my home, I thought, why not eat whatever I can find, including the ice cream in the back of my freezer.  I was thinking it was ok since what had occurred and I feeling sad about what could have happened especially if it was my turn to run Boston this year.  Instead of binge eating, I went to my bed to lay down, and take a moment to think.  That moment, I dedicated myself to choose, and I chose to take control.  While I could not control what happened, and I wasn't about to let my emotion control me.  I will control my circle of influence and made Asian Stir Fry and Braised Swiss Chard.  I said a little prayer being thankful for my family, a little love to those families affected, the opportunities that have been given to me, and to the opportunities that will be provided to me.  There have been many times that I have given up when I felt bad.  This time I will not let my emotions get the best of me!  Good Food for a Good Life!  So that I may bring more Awesomeness to more people!

When I first started to learn about running, I said, "I am going to run Boston."  Then I hurt my back in October, I asked, "Am I going to be able to run Boston."  When I had my seizure, I asked, "Am I going to be able to run Boston."  And today, I ask again, "Am I going to be able to run Boston, and my answer is YES!!!!!"

I plan on running/walking my next marathon, which most likely will be the Baltimore Marathon in October 2013, and I invite you all to join me.  Run for something more that who you are!  And my heart is in Boston today.

Kiss your loved ones tonight!

St. Baldrick - Like Daughter, Like Father

I don't ever remember being as brave as my Daughter, Emily is today.  It's taken me about 43 years to figure out who I am.  Let me restate that last sentence.  I am still trying to figure out my place in the universe!

As we sat at The Bench, sans Irene, having lunch, my daughter and her friends moved about the restaurant as normal teenagers do.  Saying hello to fellow classmates and giggling as teens do at that age.  My daughter Emily shoves into my hands a clipboard full of small print with her signature on it.  I asked her, "Are you sure? You know Mom is going to kill me!"  She gave me her typical look of disapproval that only a teenage girl would give to her parents (the kind of look that I know what I am doing and I will prove it Look), and she answered, "Yes!"

A sense of pride overcame me as I looked at my beautiful daughter transform from a little girl into the awesome young lady that I know she already is.  I asked her why do you want to do this to make sure she was not doing it from peer pressure.  Her reply did not shock me because I know how Giving she can be.  She said, "I do not want any kids to have cancer anymore" as her eyes welled up with tears as she thought about her friend Juliana's Cousin passing not too long ago of cancer.

No family should suffer the lose of a child.  As she sat down and removed her headphones and glasses, I videoed her noggin being shaved and remembering that she had more hair when she was born, 15 years ago.  I watched and thought about my episode about 6 weeks ago, where it was possible that my little girl would be shedding tears for me rather and doing something that only a handful of woman would ever do and enjoying it.

Even though it does state in my will, there will be no crying at my funeral, and she must play Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" and Erasure's version of "Take a Chance on Me."  Well all is stable for now and I get to see my kids do more Awesomely Awesome stuff that would make any Parent proud.  Never take Today for granted because Tomorrow might not be here.

Of course, I sat down right after she was done, to make sure she was not the lone baldy in the household.  The barber offered his couch to me knowing that Irene would kick me to the street for allowing her Daughter be bald.  As the warmth of the buzzer grazed my hair leaving my mane on the floor, I smiled and asked my boys if they wanted to do it also.  They looked at me and shook their heads no way!  My guess they are not ready.  We will wait until next year :)

I am a lucky guy to have an awesome family, especially a Daughter to keep me in check!  Emily and I can now add another thing that we have in common, wearing hats when it is cold outside.  Thank God that she looks more like Irene than me, because I am sure no guy wants to go out with someone that looks like me, let alone a bald looking female version of me.  Again, I am still amazed that I am still married for 16 years!

First words that came out of Irene's mouth when she got home from work, "Seriously, I would have done it with you.  You look beautiful!"

I am so proud of Emily in her support to Find a Cure for Childhood Cancer.  Please visit St. Baldrick's Foundation and help find a cure for childhood cancer at http://www.stbaldricks.org/

This time, Like Daughter-Like Father! Also I expect your showers to be at least 20 minutes shorter!
